Overview

Hello! I’m Sleep, a multidisciplinary computer toucher. I like building platforms that developers and data scientists like to use, by automating away the tedious aspects of the cloud.

Experience

Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Aura Home

2024 — present

Staff DevOps Engineer, Journera

2017 — 2024
  • I headed the DevOps team, responsible for the company’s technical infrastructure. My focus was on automating as much as possible, both for the ops team, and, more importantly, for Journera’s developers and data scientists.
  • As team lead, I was the CTO’s right hand when it came to infrastructure, tooling, and automation. I worked with the developer and data science team leads to keep our priorities in sync and ensure we built a platform and tools that met their needs.
  • I designed and developed our internal deployment platform, which provided features like automatically rolling out applications to our staging environment and one click promotion to our production environment.
  • I was responsible for the infrastructure and platform security aspects of our SOC 2 audit, including keeping track of and fixing container and application dependency vulnerabilities. I organized our regular (biannual) penetration testing, and prioritized fixing any issues they uncovered (frequently while testing was still underway).
  • I wrote tools to help manage our cloud costs that highlighted billing anomalies and determined optimum resource reservations. I also worked on general cost-saving projects, including enabling spot instance use for our core platform.
  • I lead the design and implementation efforts of modernizing our platform security using tools that included Tailscale, AWS Sessions Manager, and AWS SSO.
  • I wrote tooling that allowed data scientists to manage their own cloud development environments. This included a slackbot to automatically nag users if their desktop was out of date, and turn off idle instances.
  • I also wrote various other tools and scripts for managing infrastructure and automation using Terraform, Go, Python, Ruby, and Ansible, run with AWS Lambdas, AWS ECS (both managed EC2 Instances and AWS Fargate), Buildkite, Concourse CI, Circle CI, and Others.
